More Trip IdeasDay 1: Scenic Drives & Settling In
If you’re driving in from Denver (by car or aboard a Bustang bus), you’re in for some stunning views. Soar over the Continental Divide on the high-mountain pass, Berthoud Pass along Hwy. 40. Once you arrive, check in to your hotel and spend some time walking around in our charming downtown districts for a craft beer and bite to eat.
Day 2: Acclimate
With elevations ranging from around 7,000 feet to 12,000-plus feet, you’ll want to take it a little slower your first day or two in Grand County if you’re coming from sea level. Begin your day by checking out art galleries and handcrafted goods. Some must-see stops include Bob Scott’s Authentic Indian Jewelry and Marjorie Cranston’s Jackstraw Mountain Gallery in Grand Lake.
Day 3: Hit the Trails
Kick off your day with short hike on the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park (remember to reserve a timed-entry permit before arriving). The Adams Falls Trail leads to a massive, tumbling waterfall that’s less than a mile from the trailhead. Then explore other easy trails in the Kawuneeche Valley like the Holzwarth Historic Site or the wheelchair-accessible Coyote Valley Trail.
Day 4: Explore the Lakes
When you’re in the headwaters region, you’ll definitely want to spend some time on a motor boat, paddleboard or kayak splashing around in sparkling lakes and reservoirs. Stop by a local marina like Trail Ridge Marina on Grand Lake or the Beacon Landing Marina on Lake Granby to rent a boat and spend a day tooling around, sunbathing and swimming.
Day 5: Hit the River
You’ll spot the Colorado River and its tributaries running throughout Grand County — but the best way to see the rushing water is aboard a raft on a guided excursion. Whether you’re seeking a leisurely float or an adrenaline-pumping adventure, seasoned guides can take you through some unforgettable spots.
Day 6: Zip Around on an ATV
At a higher speed, you can see even more towering mountain outlooks — so hop on an ATV and take a scenic drive. Kremmling is known for its unbeatable backcountry routes, like the riverside twists and turns along Trough Road. Get in touch with a local outfitter like High Country Tours where their guides will take you along the best hidden-gem routes.
Day 7: Western Adventures
Let a local cowpoke lead you through aspen-lined pathways on a Western horseback ride. Get a ticket to the Granby Rodeo at the Flying Heels Arena, running all summer. Or take a look back in time at one of the local museums, like the Pioneer Village Museum where you can see the region’s old blacksmith shop, schoolhouses and more.
