5 Things to Do in The Spring Off Season

Ahh, April and May. As the ski areas close for the season and the rivers swell with snowmelt, Grand County transforms from a winter playground into a hidden gem destination for solitude seekers. Those in the know can still enjoy the national forest on snowshoes or hook a massive lake trout from the waters of our reservoirs, all while cashing in on the lowest lodging rates of the season.

Here are 5 things to do in the spring off-season:

Primetime for Snowshoeing

While the middle of winter boasts better snow conditions, late April and May can still offer great snowshoeing opportunities, especially if a late-season blast of snow rolls through the valley. Popular winter trails in the Berthoud Pass area, the Byers Peak Wilderness, and Rocky Mountain National Park — such as the Onahu Creek Trail or Bowen Gulch Trail — are all accessible, and crowd-free this time of year. Expect occasional muddy conditions (especially into May), but plenty of solitude.

Fish the Waters of Grand Lake and Granby Reservoir

Once the ice recedes from Grand County's lakes and reservoirs, be prepared for some hungry trout. If you don't mind getting your waders a little muddy, there is great shore fishing to be had on Lake Granby, Shadow Mountain Reservoir and Grand Lake in late April and early May. As soon as the boat ramps and marinas open for the season, anglers can access many of the trophy-sized lake trout lurking in the deep waters in the middle of Lake Granby. So rally your buddies: late April and early May are ideal for a spur-of-the-moment fishing trip.

Take a Dip in Hot Sulphur Springs

Some indulgences are welcome any time of year — like soaking in a thermal hot spring. Head to Grand County's epicenter of all things ahhh, Hot Sulphur Springs Resort and Spa. Open year-round, this collection of 21 pools boast tension-melting temperatures between 95º and 112º F, and enough minerals to refresh your skin and cleanse away any stress you've built up over the winter.

Visit a Historical Attraction

Another activity that knows no season is visiting one of Grand County's historical attractions and museums. Whether you take a step back in time at Cozen's Ranch, visit the Kauffman House Museum to learn all about the rich history of Grand Lake, or discover your pioneer spirit at the Pioneer Village Museum in Hot Sulphur Springs, you'll find our history fascinating any time of year.
